Shen Gen” means “deep roots” in Chinese.

It’s a name that reflects both my personal journey and the philosophy behind the firm.

When I was 25, I started an international freight forwarding company in Shanghai. I spent a lot of time working with my accountant to ensure transactions were properly recorded—but no one ever explained the financial reports or what they meant for the business. There was no clear compass for decision-making. Without visibility into margins, cash flow, or operational efficiency, I was not equipped to make informed business decisions. That experience stayed with me.

After leaving that business, I moved to the United States and focused on building the financial skill set I knew I needed. I earned an MBA, followed by a Master of Science in Accounting. Curious about tax strategy and regulatory impact, I also enrolled in Bentley University’s Master of Science in Taxation program. After completing several foundational courses, I realized I had gained what I needed to support others—and I was ready to serve.

As I began practicing as a CPA, I naturally gravitated toward working with founders. With my background as an entrepreneur, I understand the pressure of managing operations while needing to make strategic, financially grounded decisions. I admire the sharp thinking and business instincts of the founders I work with. I see my role as a financial translator—walking through financials line by line, helping them connect metrics to operations, and turning reporting into strategy.

That’s where the name Shen Gen truly comes to life.

In the movie Avatar, the roots of the trees hold memory and connect the entire ecosystem. I see financials the same way—they reflect history, reveal patterns, and show how every part of a business is interconnected.
